University
of Iowa Fellowship in Laparoscopic Surgery & Endourology
Description of Program
Currently the University of Iowa program is a 2-year duration designed
to develop the surgical, clinical and research skills of the Fellow candidate
in all aspects of Endourology and Laparoscopic surgery. Complementary
to these goals the Fellow will be expected to participate in a number
of clinical and basic research projects related to minimally invasive
surgery. As part of the program the Fellow will be exposed to a large
clinical volume of oncology, which has become an increasingly important
focus of minimally invasive surgery. In addition, the Fellow will be trained
in robotics through the use of our daVinci® robotic surgical system.
The anticipated time schedule will be 75% clinical and 25% research. The
Fellow candidate will be appointed at the level of Junior Faculty Attending.

Research Facilities & Supervision
Laboratory (4400 sq. ft) and bench space (340 linear ft) facilities are
easily accessible. We have a large animal facility, which provides equipment
for laparoscopic surgery, full OR and veterinary support as well as ready
access to animate and inanimate surgical models. There are seven (7) Ph.D.’s
associated with the Department of Urology
On campus housing
No “on-campus” housing. Fellows will likely rent in the university
surrounding areas, easily within 10 minutes of the hospital center. Housing
costs are very affordable. Public schools and recreational activities
are highly rated on a national level. Crime is almost non-existent.
Fellows will take call as other faculty members. This will be at the level of a Urology Faculty Attending. This is anticipated to be twice every six months.
