Description
of Program
The fellowship program is a two-year postgraduate course
designed to train urologists with plans to pursue an
academic career. The two-year program integrates clinical
and research work in stone disease, urologic oncology,
reconstructive surgery, BPH, etc. The fellow will spend
the first year doing basic science and clinical research
work. This effort will be integrated with one or two
other research fellows from abroad. All fellows will
work together on different research projects; this arrangement
facilitates exchange of ideas and ensures that projects
are completed within the appropriate time frame.
Long
Island Jewish Medical Center is well equipped with Biotech
(animal) laboratory staffed with experienced workers
that will assist the fellows in the daily care of the
animals. In addition, basic science research labs are
available, and the fellow will get a chance to design
his/her own experiments or join an ongoing experiment
and work in collaboration with Dr. Leslie Kushner, Ph.D.-
Director of Research.
At
the end of the first year, the fellow will be expected
to have obtained enough knowledge in basic science and
clinical urologic research as to allow him to be an
independent investigator in the years to come.
The
second year is designed to give the fellow an exposure
to all the clinical cases. The fellow will be working
closely with Drs. Arthur Smith. He will
be an active participant in the operating room and will
perform and assist in various endourologic and laparoscopic
cases
