Endourological Society – Changhai Hospital

Changhai Hospital is the first affiliated hospital of the Second Military Medical University where locates in Shanghai, China. The Hospital covers an area of 234,000 square meters?expending 2,100 beds?and is one of the most famous large-scale general hospitals in China. The hospital has distinctive medical services features and is currently the largest single hospital in Shanghai. In the meantime, Changhai Hospital has an independent clinical education center and a clinical skill training center, covering more than 20,000 square meters, which can carry out various training courses from in vitro to in vivo.

The Division of Urology is a national key discipline and a key discipline in Shanghai. It is one of the first batch of certified urological endoscopy technique training bases and is a GCP Drug Clinical Trial Center certified by the Health Planning Commission. The department has 91 beds, a more than 1000 square meters minimally invasive urology training center and 5 independent operation rooms (one of which is Da Vinci robot operation room). The annual operation room volume is more than 5000 and can perform a variety of all types of urological laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeries. Also, the department owns an independent extracorporeal shock wave treatment room, a cystoscope room and a urodynamic examination room. Professor Yinghao Sun, the leader of the discipline, is the chairman of Chinese Urological Association and the former chairman of Asian Urological Association. The department also has strong urological talent force as other key members of the department hold important academic positions in various academic groups. In addition, the department has a basic research laboratory covering more than 500 square meters, capable of carrying out various technical experimental projects. So far, it has obtained more than 40 national academic projects, and received a total of 230 million USD$ in grants.

The urology department has carried out more than 28 years of minimally invasive surgery for endoscopic calculi, with total amount of surgery exceeding 15,000. It is among the leading units of minimally invasive treatment for urological stones in China with the highest level of endoscopic techniques and the largest number of cases. Various complicated and difficult surgeries can be performed here such as rigid ureteroscopic lithotripsy, flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy and combined lithotripsy surgery. Some novel techniques including the high-power holmium laser percutaneous nephrolithotomy and the Sun’s tip-flexible semi-rigid Ureterorenoscopy were first applied here and has become routine surgeries.

In terms of robotic laparoscopic surgery, the department has two latest generation of Da Vinci robotic surgery systems, and the amount of urological robotic surgery is the second largest in Asia, reaching 645 cases per year. The department carries out various types of robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery in urology, including laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, laparoscopic radical cystectomy (ileal bladder replacement), laparoscopic kidney surgery (resection of renal cancer, partial renal section, renal cancer with vena cava tumor thrombectomy) and laparoscopic urinary tract reconstruction. It owns the only one certified technical training center for da Vinci robotic surgery system in mainland of China.

The Endourology and Minimally Invasive Fellowship Programs at Changhai Hospital offers two distinct fellowship streams. Candidates may apply for one or both programs.

1) Advanced Laparoscopy & Robotics focusing on laparoscopic and robotic oncologic and reconstructive procedures. The Program Director for this fellowship is Dr. Yinghao Sun. For more information regarding the Lap/Robotics fellowship, please contact Dr. Gao at gxfdoc@sina.com.

Description of Program

This is a two-year fellowship program involving both research and clinical experience in laparoscopic and endourologic problems from the adrenal gland to the prostate. Trainees can receive step-by-step training from theoretical lectures to in vitro models and animal experiments, systematic and standardized teaching and training on laparoscopy, and can closely observe the fellows performing various types of laparoscopic and robotic laparoscopic surgery. Surgery types include laparoscopic or Da Vinci robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, laparoscopic radical cystectomy (ileal bladder replacement), laparoscopic kidney surgery (resection of renal cancer, partial nephrectomy, renal cancer with vena cava tumor thrombectomy, etc.) and laparoscopic urinary tract reconstruction. At the same time, based on the da Vinci Robotics Technical Training Center owned by the Center, the operation procedure of the Da Vinci Robotic Surgery System can be systematically studied, and the Da Vinci robot training certificate can be obtained in the end of the training.

2) Advanced Endourology and Stone Disease which has an emphasis on endourology with some exposure to stone minimally invasive treatment procedure. The Program Director for this fellowship is Dr. Xiaofeng Gao.

For more information regarding the Lap/Robotics fellowship, please contact Dr. Gao at gxfdoc@sina.com.

Description of Program

This is a two-year fellowship program in advanced Endourology and stone disease. Trainees can receive step-by-step training from theoretical lectures to in vitro models and animal experiments, systematic and standardized teaching and training on urinary calculi, and can closely observe the fellows performing rigid ureteroscopic lithotripsy, flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy and laparoscopic pelvilithotomy. At the same time, students can also learn the innovative techniques of minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment for various stone diseases, including the Sun’s tip-flexible semi-rigid Ureterorenoscopic lithotripsy and various types of combined lithotripsy surgery for difficult and complex stone cases. The center also holds a training course on minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of urinary calculi every quarter, and trainees who finish the training course can obtain a certified training certificate.

Research Opportunity

Based on the center’s large laboratory and GCP clinical drug testing platform, there will be a strong emphasis on research with opportunities for both clinical and basic science projects. Various researches from basic science to engineering projects and medical device testing could be conducted under the guidance of laboratory instructors. The professor instructors and assistant in the laboratory and GCP platform are ready to help students with all research stuff.
