Innovator of UMP (Ultra-Mini PCNL) ; German maker Schoelly has made the instruments and named them “UMP by Janak Desai”.

Awarded Honorary FRCS from Royal college of physicians & surgeons, Glasgow

Nominated as Honorary Corresponding member of DGU – German Urology Society.

Awarded the B C Roy award by Medical council of India. This award is given to the recipient by President of India.

Was invited in Guangzhou(China) – Feb 2012, & 2013 to demonstrate surgeries for Stones – Ultra-Mini PCNL and Flexible Ureteroscopy. Was invited to Sun Yat Sen University ( Guangzhou) in 2014 for a PNL workshop.

Was invited as visiting Prof. of Urology at Romania in July 2008. Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy conferred the title of “Visiting Professor” after a successful workshop on PCNL at the County hospital, Timisoara.

Was invited by the SriLankan Urology Association to do a workshop on PCNL in Nov 2008 and Dec 2010. Was invited by the Bangla-Desh Urology Association thrice to conduct workshops on PCNL.

Faculty in Paris “ 2nd and 3rd and 4th Challenges in Endourology” – June2012 ,June 2013 and June 2014. Demonstrated a video on UMP ( Ultra-Mini PCNL). Faculty in Paris for CIE-2014 and did a live demonstration of UMP at the Tenon Hospital.

Was invited to deliver a plenary session talk in Lima ( Peru) : Annual meeting of the South American Urology Association. (CAU).

Was invited by the Brazilian Endo-Urology society to deliver a plenary session talk on UMP ; Also to do live surgeries of UMP in Sao Paulo – Oct 2013

Was invited in Buenos Aires (Argentina) to deliver a talk on UMP – Oct 2013.

Published the first paper on UMP in the BJUI ( British Journal of Urology International).

The video on UMP in Journal of Endourology-Videourology was amongst the top five videos viewed worldwide.

Was invited to Istanbul in February 2014 for a workshop on Pediatric urolithiasis – live demonstration of UMP was done.

Julio Davalos, MD

Dr. Davalos is clinical faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and he is the director of the kidney stone programs at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center and Chesapeake Urology in Baltimore, MD.  He performed the world's first free standing ASC PCNL in April 2016 and to date had performed more than 1200 ASC PCNL procedures.  He has a passion for education and he has helped train more than 100 community urologists and residents and he has a fellowship dedicated to PCNL surgery.  

Karen Stern, MD

Karen Stern M.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology at Mayo Clinic Arizona in Phoenix, Arizona. She specializes in the medical and surgical management of complex stone disease as well as the minimally invasive management of BPH. At Mayo Clinic she manages the multi-disciplinary stone clinic for recurrent stone formers which includes urology, nephrology and a dietician who specializes in stone prevention. Her surgical practice includes complex ureteroscopy, mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy, and ultrasound-guided percutaneous access for PCNL. She is involved in multiple ongoing clinical trials and is part of the Endourology Disease Group for Excellence (EDGE) and Collaborative for Research in Endourology (CoRE) research consortiums. She received her M.D. from the University of Arizona, where she received the Alpha Omega Alpha distinction. She completed Urology residency at Mayo Clinic Arizona and was a Mayo Clinic Scholar during her Endourology fellowship at the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute at Cleveland Clinic where she was awarded the Urology Fellow Teacher of the Year in 2019. She is the Assistant Program Director for the Endourology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Arizona and takes an active role in medical student, resident, and fellow education.
