Dr. Rajesh Ahlawat

Dr. Rajesh Ahlawat is currently the Group Chairman, Institute of Urology and Robotic Surgery at Medanta, the Medicity, India. Dr. Ahlawat has initiated and established four successful Urology and Renal Transplant programs in India, at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, Fortis Hospitals, New Delhi, and Medanta, the Medicity, Gurgaon. He has spearheaded the best rated Minimally Invasive Urology services in India at all his workplaces. An accomplished minimally invasive surgeon, he has been invited as guest faculty for live demonstration of variety of endourologic, laparoscopic and robotic surgeries at live surgery workshops held around the world. He was the lead surgeon for the ground-breaking VUI Robotic Kidney Transplant with Regional Hypothermia technique, developed by Vattikuti Urology Institute-Medanta team. He has been a faculty to demonstrate live robotic renal transplantation technique around the world (Bilbao, Barcelona, Rome, Gent, Chandigarh, Delhi and Bangaluru and Istanbul). A teacher and academician at heart, Dr. Ahlawat initiated Urology training M.Ch. and D.N.B. programs at all previous institutions of his association. He has published extensively, with a RG score of 38.27 as on Jun 2021. He was awarded the Chakraborty Fellowship by Indian American Urological Association (1992), and PN Berry Fellowship by Indian High Commission, UK (1995). Dr. Ahlawat is 2016 recipient of President’s Gold Medal by USI. He was honoured with the title of Honorary Lecturer conferred to him by the University College London Hospitals (UCLH), U.K. in 1995. Dr. Ahlawat has also served at Board of Directors of Endourology Society from 2010 to 2012. He has been conferred Lifetime Achievement Award by North Zone Urological Society of India in 2019.

Alberto Breda, MD

Head of the Oncology Urology Unit and Kidney Transplant Surgical Team Urology Department, Fundació Puigvert, Barcelona.

Alberto Breda is a Urologic Surgeon specialized in uro-oncology and kidney transplantation with special interest in minimally invasive surgery. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Padova School of Medicine and Surgery where he also completed his Urology Residency and PhD in renal cryotherapy. He then completed a clinical Research Fellowship at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California (UCLA), with a subsequent appointment as Clinical Instructor and Assistant Professor. During this period, Dr. Breda gained expertise in endourology with flexible instruments and lasers and in minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic-assisted techniques.

In 2009 he joined the Urology Department of Fundació Puigvert in Barcelona where he currently holds the position of Head of the Oncology Urology Unit and Kidney Transplant Surgical Team.

Dr. Breda has authored over 200 articles in indexed urological journals and 20 chapters in specialized books as well as several videos on surgical techniques. He has more than 300 papers presented in congresses and scientific meetings, some of them awarded and has been invited to participate as guest lecturer and as guest surgeon in many of them. He has chaired and organized many national and international urological courses and masterclasses.

He is member of several editorial Boards of international journals and member of several scientific societies, including the Spanish Urological Association (AEU), the European Association of Urology (EAU), the Endourological Society and the Italian Society of Urology (SIU). Furthermore he is Honorary Member of several international societies.

Since 2015 he is Chairman of the European Guidelines in Kidney Transplantation. In 2016 he was appointed as Chairman of the Laparoscopic Group of the ESUT/EAU and Director of Robotic Courses in Kidney Transplantation of the ERUS/EAU. He is currently the Chairman of the EAU Robotic Urology Section (ERUS).

Dr. Mahesh R.Desai

Dr. Mahesh Desai obtained his MBBS (1966) and M.S. in General Surgery (1970) from B.J. Medical College, Pune University. He received fellowship (FRCS) from the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Edinburgh in 1973.  In U.K. he also obtained specialized training in Urology. He returned to India and started practice at Ahmedabad. Soon he realized the importance of institutionalized treatment for various kidney diseases. In the year 1976, he joined hands with Dr. V.V. Desai and established the Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) in a rural area Nadiad in the state of Gujarat in India with the aim of providing most modern treatment for the common man.

He was the Chairman of the Department of Urology at MPUH since 1983 upto 2010. He is the Managing Trustee of MPUH and Honorary Managing Director of Muljibhai Patel Society for Research in Nephro-Urology since 16th February, 2001 and the Director of the Jayaramdas Patel Academic Center.    He has held many national and international positions in the field of Urology, some of which are:

* President, Urological Society of India (2006-2007).

* Chairman, Sub-specialties, Society International d’Urologie (SIU)

* Chairman, Scientific Committee, Endourology  Society Inc. ( 2007 - present)

* President, Asian Society of Endourology (2008 -  present).

* Chairman, Endourology Education Training Site Committee of Endourology Society Inc. (2008 - present).

* Member, International Committee of American Urological Association (2008 - 2010).

* President-Elect,  Society International d’Urologie (SIU) (November 2009 - present).

He has mastered the most modern treatment for the stone disease and developed innovative techniques in Percutaenous Nephrolithotrispy (PCNL), Ureteroscopy and ESWL. So far he has done more than 12000 PCNL, probably the largest series in the world. He expanded the use of ultrasound in Urology and established, for the first time, the service of kidney transplantation in Gujarat. He did his first Renal transplant in the year 1980, 1845 Renal Transplants have been done at MPUH so far.  He organized an epidemiological survey for prostatic diseases in ageing male population in Kheda / Charotar  district, Gujarat, India.

He was the Treasurer, Hon. Secretary and the President of the West Zone Chapter of Urological Society of India, and was also the Treasurer and the President of Urological Society of India.  He was the Chairman of the Endourological Section of the Urological Society of India.  He also was the National Delegate of Society International d’Urologie.

He has successfully organized several conferences and workshops in India. The institute has produced 450 scientific papers, which were presented at various national and international seminars and conferences. He has so far conducted 93 workshops, and published 88 scientific papers in national & international journals. His contributions based on academic and scientific activities have resulted in putting Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital as one of the premier institutes in urology, not only in India but also Internationally. In  recognition  of its teaching program,  Muljibhai  Patel Urological  Hospital  gained recognition as a teaching  Institute  for postgraduate  studies in Nephrology and Urology by the  National Board of Examinations, New Delhi, since 11th March 1993. Dr. Mahesh Desai has been actively involved in the development and promotion of urological education. The DNB training program has 4 students in Urology per year. Dr Desai is an Examiner for the National Board of Examination, Bangladesh University and National University of Singapore.
